07 March 2008 Road pricing 'will not solve transport problems'

A national road pricing scheme is not the best solution, the ABD claims Car insurance drivers and other road users will not necessarily benefit from the announcement by the government that it is to postpone the introduction of a national road pricing scheme.

That is the view of the Association of British Drivers (ABD), who argued that such a system would not solve the problems of the UK's transport infrastructure.

Nigel Humphries, ABD policy adviser, said road pricing would not alleviate problems related to congestion and high costs.

His comments came after transport secretary Ruth Kelly earlier this week congestion will be tackled with an injection of extra funding.

But the campaigning organisation suggested the government is failing to address the issue effectively.

Mr Humphries said that in London, where a road pricing scheme aims to reduce congestion, the system has only seen "minimal" improvements in the time spent on journeys.

"Since time and money are related, any attempt to achieve the same level of traffic regulation by a price mechanism will cost the economy at least as much as the congestion did in the first place," he argued.
