06 March 2008 Thieves target car at beauty spot

Car targeted at beauty spot Car thieves looking for handbags and wallets targeted a vehicle at a popular beauty spot at the weekend, prompting police to stress the importance of taking basic crime prevention measures.

West Surrey Police said thieves broke into a Renault Clio parked in the Frensham Little Pond car park in Tilford while the owners were enjoying a day out, stealing a handbag and causing damage to the vehicle.

Car insurance holders are now being urged to remove all valuable items from their cars when leaving them parked in beauty spots as thieves often target these areas at weekends knowing car parks will be busy and vehicles will be left unattended for some time.

They are advised not to hide possessions in the glove box and other predictable places and to park their cars in the open, away from shrubbery and beside busy pathways.

They should also ensure their vehicles are securely locked and that any alarms and steering locks are used, even when the vehicle is only left for a short period of time.

According to the Sussex Express police in the country have reported that thieves have been spying on potential victims who have left their cars parked in beauty spots to go walking, watching to see where they hide their valuables.
