06 March 2008 '10m UK drivers' victims of road rage

UK drivers are road rage victims In the last three years, more than ten million UK drivers have been a victim of road rage, according to figures from Zurich Insurance.

A survey carried out by the company revealed that one on three drivers have been cut up or tailgated by an angry motorist or suffered verbal or physical threats and abuse.

One in seven have been followed by another driver and one in ten have been confronted or threatened by a motorist who has pulled over or got out of their car.

The survey shows that the worst time for aggression on the road is during the evening rush hour when people are travelling home from work.

"A stressed driver is more likely to be a dangerous driver, so we urge all motorists to take precautions if they feel the red mist descending," said Zurich's Mike Quinton.

Driving in a potentially dangerous way as a result of stress or frustration could not only put lives at risk but also lead to higher car insurance premiums if drivers have an accident.

Meanwhile, research from Direct Line has shown that many motorists feel unsafe when sharing the motorway with lorries. Some 18 per cent said they felt stressed overtaking a lorry while 39 per cent felt intimidated driving past an HGV.
