05 March 2008 DfT: More funding would tackle city congestion
Congestion could be tackled on urban roads with increased funding, according to the Department for Transport. The government body has stated that the £200 million per year Transport Innovation Fund designed to tackle the problem has been extended by over four years.
It may be that roads with fewer cars on result in a reduced number of accidents, which in turn could see a decrease in the amount of car insurance claims made each year.
According to transport minister Ruth Kelly, new measures designed to tackle congestion will present a positive situation for drivers.
She said: "The measures I've outlined today will tackle congestion in our towns, cities and on the motorways in a creative way which will be a win-win for the motorist."
This came as plans were announced to allow motorists to use the hard shoulder on motorways such as the M1 and M6 during busy periods.
