04 March 2008 Rush hour drivers 'given M27 hard shoulder'
A measure to reduce congestion in Hampshire sees motorists on the M27 allowed to use the hard shoulder at busy periods, it has been reported. The Basingstoke Gazette has stated that cameras will be installed on the motorway which detect the number of vehicles on the road and displays a sign when it is permissible to use the lane.
It comes after trials of the system on the M42 in Birmingham and could be a relief to car insurance policy holders who often find themselves stuck in traffic.
According to transport minister Ruth Kelly, this will allow for "smooth traffic flow" and will make journeys more reliable.
However, the BBC reported that Norman Baker from the Liberal Democrats believes the policy is a "dog's dinner".
"It confuses the purpose of a hard shoulder, which we have been told for decades exists for safety reasons," he said.
