04 March 2008 Fines for 'dirty drivers'

Dirty drivers could be fined. Motorists could be fined for driving a pollutant vehicle in Lincolnshire, a news source in the area reports.

According to the Lincolnshire Echo, fixed penalty notices could be handed out to those behind the wheel of vehicles with smoky exhausts by Lincolnshire City Council.

Officials from the body will spend the next 12 months drawing up the plans, the news source adds.

But it may be that motorists choose to clean up their acts in order to avoid the fines, as they may not be able to afford an extra charge in addition to the cost of car insurance and road tax bills.

And this comes after London mayor Ken Livingston introduced new charges for people behind the wheel of high-polluting vehicles.

From October, motorists in gas-guzzling automobiles will be asked to pay a £25 levy in order to enter the busier parts of the capital.
