28 February 2008 Motorists using mobile phones 'defy comprehension'

Motorists have been given another mobile phone warning. Drivers who choose to use their mobile phones behind the wheel act incomprehensibly, according to a police chief.

The BBC reports that Chief Superintendent (CS) Mike McCormick cannot believe that people are still texting and making calls on the road.

Yesterday marked a year since new legislation was introduced meaning those caught on their phones face a £60 fine and three points on their driving licence.

It may be that such a conviction also has an effect on a car insurance policy, as cover firms could choose not to offer cheap policies to guilty motorists if they believe them to be a risk on the roads.

CS McCormick comments that motorists should divert their call and not their attention.

"If you take your eyes of the road or are distracted even for a split second due to using your mobile phone, it could result in disastrous consequences," he said.
