28 February 2008 Motorists using mobile phones 'defy comprehension'
Drivers who choose to use their mobile phones behind the wheel act incomprehensibly, according to a police chief. The BBC reports that Chief Superintendent (CS) Mike McCormick cannot believe that people are still texting and making calls on the road.
Yesterday marked a year since new legislation was introduced meaning those caught on their phones face a £60 fine and three points on their driving licence.
It may be that such a conviction also has an effect on a car insurance policy, as cover firms could choose not to offer cheap policies to guilty motorists if they believe them to be a risk on the roads.
CS McCormick comments that motorists should divert their call and not their attention.
"If you take your eyes of the road or are distracted even for a split second due to using your mobile phone, it could result in disastrous consequences," he said.
