27 February 2008 Eating at wheel 'could cause accidents'
Motorists in the UK have been warned of the dangers of eating at the wheel.Research from Green Flag and road safety group Brake has revealed that 15 per cent of people eat a meal on the road at least once a week.
The study added that eating a bag of crisps behind the wheel can slow down reaction times by 29 per cent.
It may be that multi-tasking in such a fashion sees people invalidate their car insurance policies, as cover firms may be reluctant to offer them cheaper deals once they are involved in a crash.
Cathy Keeler from Brake commented that "crazy multi-tasking while driving causes deaths and injuries".
She said: "No-one would dream of snacking on a sarnie or picking up the phone while using a chain saw or doing any other safety-critical job - and we mustn't when driving."
The latest edition of the Highway Code states that drivers should not smoke behind the wheel, as they will be pulled over if police officers view them as a danger.
