26 February 2008 'Three-in-four London drivers against higher congestion charge'

Londoners are against new congestion charge. Close to three-quarters of motorists in London believe that mayor Ken Livingstone's decision to increase the congestion charge has left drivers with a bill which is too high, new research has found.

According to an ICM poll cited by Porsche, 74 per cent of people on the road believe that the £25 levy for entering the centre of London in a high-emissions vehicle is too much.

Indeed, it may be that motorists struggle to pay in addition to road tax and car insurance policies.

The poll also found that 81 per cent of respondents believe such road pricing will be bad for London businesses, while 51 per cent state it is unfair that drivers have to foot the bill over an environmental issue.

"Londoners agree that the mayor's plans to introduce a massive new charge for larger vehicles is totally unfair and is more about squeezing money out of motorists than trying to help the environment," said Porsche GB managing director Andy Goss.

A 10 Downing Street petition in 2007 saw more than 1.8 million people sign against road pricing.
