25 February 2008 Bath protection racket reported
Motorists in Bath have become the victims of an illegal protection racket in the area, according to a national news source. The BBC states that drivers at the Manvers Site have been targeted by criminals who approach them and ask for money to protect their vehicles.
If they do not pay, it may be that they damage their cars - something which could compromise a car insurance policy or forces them to pay for repairs themselves.
But officers from Avon and Somerset Police state that they "regularly patrol the car park, making several visits every day".
"Anyone who has been threatened or had their car vandalised should report the matter to police immediately," the body adds.
Meanwhile, officers in Gosport have reported an increase in vehicle crime over the last six weeks.
The Basingstoke Gazette reports that there have been 80 such incidents during the period.
