25 February 2008 Drivers 'blind to environmental issues'

Drivers may not be aware of environmental damage. Issues surrounding carbon emissions are lost on the majority of motorists in the UK, according to a new report.

Figures from the Environmental Transport Association show that 65 per cent of people are unaware of the amount of CO2 they emit when they drive.

Indeed, group director Andrew Davis commented that some motorists may have been left behind over the matter as it develops.

However, some people can benefit from levies on car insurance and road tax if they show themselves to be a more conscientious driver.

He said: "A large proportion of people are aware that cars pollute, but may not know how to take the first step towards more environmentally-friendly driving."

Mr Davis added that "awareness of the CO2 produced by cars is incredibly low".

Environmental issues have been an important topic across the media in recent times, with former US vice-president Al Gore releasing his documentary on the subject An Inconvenient Truth.

The politician has since raised awareness by staging the Live Earth concerts at worldwide locations simultaneously last year.
