22 February 2008 Stop means stop, officials tell rogue drivers
An initiative has been launched in order to stop the number of rogue motorists speeding past lollipop men and women, it has been reported. The Stop Means Stop campaign comes after 50 motorists were found to have sped past wardens outside schools in Manchester last year, according to the Manchester Evening News (MEN).
It added that police officials will be looking to fine drivers caught breaking the law in such a fashion in addition to imposing a three-point licence penalty.
This could end up having an effect on a car insurance policy, as cover firms could see the acts indicative of a dangerous road user.
"School crossing patrols have the legal power to stop traffic, and drivers who disobey them can be fined up to £1,000 plus a minimum of three penalty points on their driving licence," said a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police.
Earlier this month, the Greater Manchester casualty reduction group Drivesafe told motorists to make sure their dogs wear seatbelts if they are to travel with them, the MEN adds.
