21 February 2008 Drivers 'should use de-icer over hot water'
Motorists in the UK have been told to use de-icer rather than hot water to defrost their windscreens, it has been reported.According to the Chorley Citizen, Lancashire County Council's Road Safety Group has warned drivers against using the kettle to crack ice on cars as it may damage the glass.
This could cause motorists to make a claim on their car insurance policies, with companies not paying out or offering cheap deals in the future if they view the act as negligent.
Road safety group manager Neil Cunliffe comments that an ice scraper and de-icer is "essential" car kit.
"In cold weather, we all need to take a bit more time to clear our car windscreens," said the official.
This comes as motorists have been reminded by Warwickshire Police to make sure they keep their vehicles under close watch if they leave them to defrost in the mornings, reports Leamington Spa Today.
