20 February 2008 Sheffield drivers condemn charging plans

Congestion charging ruled out by Sheffield drivers. Motorists in Sheffield have voice their disapproval over plans to introduce a charge for travelling into the city centre, it has been reported.

According to the Sheffield Star, environmental official in the region Andy Nolan commented that such a fee would be one method of reducing the area's carbon footprint.

However, the idea was quickly condemned by the city's motorists, who claimed that they should not have to use the highways on top of road tax and car insurance fees.

Simon Clement-Jones, speaking for the Liberal Democrats, supports the view of the drivers.

"We don't think that congestion charging is appropriate for Sheffield at this time," he said.

This follows the news that London mayor Ken Livingston is to increase the congestion charge for travelling in central London.

From October 27th, a £25 daily fee will be collected from people driving vehicles which emit high volumes of CO2.
