20 February 2008 Drivers told not to watch birds

Drivers should keep eyes on the road. Motorists have been warned to keep their eyes on the road and not on the sky if flocks of starlings appear, it has been reported.

According to the BBC, tens of thousands of the birds often appear above highways north and west of Gretna Green at dusk and dawn.

Drivers who try to get a good look at the flocks could risk an accident and find themselves invalidating their car insurance policies.

A spokesman for police in Dumfries and Galloway commented that "the road is a dangerous environment" and that people should not be distracted.

The birds, which belong to the Muscicapoidea family along with thrushes and flycatchers, often fly together in large groups.

"Drivers should focus on the roadway rather than on the large groups of starlings up in the sky," the representative said.

He added: "If they want to watch the birds they should pull off onto a side road or into a lay-by."
