19 February 2008 Children 'big distraction for drivers'

Children are a big road distraction. Motorists have named children as their biggest distraction when they are on the road in new research.

Automobile manufacturer Citroen found that close to 90 per cent of the 1,000 people polled cited youngsters as a problem while behind the wheel.

With ten per cent of adults claiming that children regularly scream and fight in the back seat, it may be that those with kids run more of a risk of compromising their car insurance policies.

This could be the case for the 25 per cent of drivers who stated that the distraction caused by children has actually caused an accident.

"It is essential that drivers ensure children are securely strapped in before setting off and that they have something to keep them occupied," said Jools Townsend from Brake, commenting on the issue to Crash.net.

This comes as Devon 24 comments that inconsiderate drivers ignoring parking rules are putting the lives of children in the area at risk.
