18 February 2008 Westminster 'welcomes cashless parking'
A new parking system in Westminster whereby cash is not used has been welcomed by the region, it has been reported. The Evening Standard states that more than 200,000 people have so far registered to use the 400 pay and display machines which only accept debit and credit card payments via mobile phone.
By December, devices which accept cash will be gone from the region, the news source adds.
However, parking costs could prove to be too expensive for those paying high car insurance and road tax bills, whether cashless or not.
The area's cabinet member for economic development and transport Danny Chalkley states that the meters represent a positive step.
He said: "The move to a convenient cashless system is the way forward and I'm pleased to give motorists the opportunity to use the service wherever they are in Westminster for the first time."
This comes as pressure mounts on NHS Lothian to cut its hospital parking fee fine, reports the Scotsman.
