18 February 2008 People 'behind driving test plans'
National newspaper the People is behind plans from the transport minister to increase the age at which teenagers can legally get behind the wheel of a car.According to the Sunday paper, it welcomes the plans from Jim Fitzpatrick to introduce a mandatory one-year gap from when a provisional licence is received to when a test can be taken.
It added that experience is a key factor when heading onto the road and that those with years of driving under their belts possess "the safest pair of hands".
And car insurance companies may lower the cost of a premium for younger drivers should the proposals come into effect and bring down highways casualties.
The newspaper stated: "Impatient 17-year-olds will baulk at this proposal, while parents and other road users will see the sense in it."
Department for Transport figures show that there were some 3,150 people killed on roads in Britain over 2006.
