14 February 2008 Families 'will suffer under congestion charge'
People who drive larger cars in order to escort their families will be hit by the new congestion charge from mayor of London Ken Livingstone, a motoring body has claimed.Revised rules to be introduced on October 27th mean that a £25 fee will be charged to those entering the central London charging zone in a vehicle emitting more than 225g per km of CO2.
But according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the new rules mean that families are set to pick up an increased bill of £6,000.
It may be that this proves to be too much in addition to road tax and car insurance prices.
"This is totally disproportionate and does not present a consistent signal to consumers," comments SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt.
Earlier this month, the SMMT revealed that there was an increase in the number of vans bought in the UK over January.
