12 February 2008 Not enough filling stations, say drivers

Drivers are worried by a lack of pumps. Motorists in the UK believe that there are currently not enough filling stations where they can pick up fuel, according to new research.

Car supermarket company Motorpoint states that the 9,500 sites providing gas may not be enough to cope with the demand of close to 30 million cars on the road.

The firm points to research from the Petrol Retailers Association which reports that 150 garages were shut down in 2007.

Indeed, car insurance customers may find that they struggle to pick up petrol if they do not live in built-up urban areas.

"If smaller independent filling stations [are being driven] out of business in some areas, more and more people are going to be forced to buy fuel from the supermarkets who may then feel able to push prices up," said Motorpoint managing director David Shelton.

The cost of fuel is thought to be a primary factor behind the increase in inflation to 2.2 per cent.
