12 February 2008 Scotland becomes toll-free as bridge charges stop

Scottish bridges are now toll-free. Motorists in Scotland can today cross bridges in the region for free after tolls were lifted by officials.

From midnight on Monday, drivers have been able to head across the Tay and Forth bridges without paying the 80 p and £1 fee which had previously been charged.

Speaking on behalf of the National Alliance Against Tolls, a representative states that this should boost tourism as well as benefit the local area.

Indeed, it could prove to be a welcome relief to drivers already paying high road tax and car insurance policies.

"It's been a long fight to remove the tolls and we're delighted Scotland will again be a toll-free nation," she said.

The Forth Bridge takes 22 million people each year, making it one of the UK's busiest crossings.

Stewart Stevenson, transport minister, has called the event a "historic day" for Scotland, according to the Scotsman.

The news source adds that congestion in the region may also increase as a result of the move.
