11 February 2008 Valentine's Day safety reminder for young drivers

Drivers should be safe on Valentine's Day. Motorists taking to the road this Valentine's Day have been reminded to stay safe as part of a new campaign, it has been reported.

The Sheffield Star states that the scheme, called Making South Yorkshire Roads Safer For My Girlfriend, is primarily aimed at drivers between 17 and 25 years old.

According to the news source, this age group is responsible for more than 30 per cent of crashes.

It may be that statistics such as this are the reason why a number of car insurance firms offer more expensive deals to younger motorists, seeing them as a risk to road safety.

"One aspect of this campaign will be vivid crash reconstructions around Valentine's Day during which the emergency services will demonstrate how casualties are removed from vehicles," said a spokesman for Rotherham Council.

Statistics from the Department for Transport show that there were 3,150 people killed in traffic collisions in the UK in 2006.
