11 February 2008 Motorists told not to dump cigarettes from window
Police in Lancashire have warned drivers in the area that they will be punished if they are caught throwing cigarettes out of their car windows, it has been reported.According to the Blackpool Gazette, the three Fylde coast authorities have told motorists that those who do can expect fines for the act.
Indeed, in the last 12 months half a dozen people have been given fines of £60 for throwing away finished stubs.
This could have an effect on car insurance policies, as firms could see the discrepancy as indicative of a dangerous driver.
"The council is determined to clean up Blackpool and we will take a hard line against anyone who damages the environment and cleanliness of our town by disposing of their waste irresponsibly," said council leader Peter Callow.
Smoking in public places such as pubs and bars was banned by officials on July 1st 2007.
