11 February 2008 Tyre checks 'should not be neglected'

Motorists should check their tyres regularly. Motorists should make sure that they do not forget about their tyres when carrying out safety checks on their vehicles, a rescue company comments.

According to Autonational Rescue, drivers often neglect to check their wheels, even though they could prove to be "a life saver" when travelling in wintry conditions, reports the Bolton News.

It may also be that keeping tyres in good condition has an effect on car insurance policies, as people will make fewer claims if their vehicles are generally in a good state.

Ronan Hart, Autonational Rescue marketing manager, states that drivers should make sure they give tyres the necessary attention.

"They should be checked regularly for damage or any signs of wear and tear. It's not sufficient to give them an occasional kick to check pressure or a cursory glance at the tread," said the official.

Meanwhile, national safety firm TyreSafe will be running BikeSafe - its first campaign to highlight the importance of maintaining bike tyres - throughout March.
