08 February 2008 Traffic project funding set for Sheffield

Sheffield traffic projects receive funding. A number of road safety projects are set to go ahead in Sheffield after the city has received approximately £8 million in funding, a local news source reports.

The Sheffield Star states that as well as a £4.5 million individual grant, the city is to gain £4 million for the £11.2 million given between itself, Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster.

Projects to make roads safer for disabled people are to be implemented, as are schemes to benefit cyclists and pedestrians, with £400,000 set to be spent on crossings in the city.

Safer highways in the city could also have an effect on car insurance prices, as cover firms could consider fewer accidents indicative of a less dangerous area and reduce prices accordingly.

The news may appease the 106 people who signed a petition to install a pedestrian crossing on Psalter Lane in the city, according to the same news provider.

Speaking on behalf of Nether Edge Neighbourhood Group, Chris Venables said "there are a lot of schoolchildren and elderly people" in the vicinity.
