07 February 2008 SMMT reveals van registrations rise
New statistics from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show an increase in the number of vans registered over January. The body has revealed that there was an 8.5 per cent rise in the number of officially-documented vehicles during the course of the month against this time last year, with 26,746 automobiles registered.
For the rolling year, this marks a 3.3 per cent hike after a total of 338,351 vehicles were sold in 2007, the group adds.
This could foreshadow an increase in van insurance policies being sold by cover firms over the next few months.
Paul Everitt, chief executive of the SMMT, believes that the statistics mark an encouraging start to 2008.
"It's early days, but by the end of the year we may well have a total that exceeds the year-end average for each of the last ten years," commented the official.
This comes after the SMMT revealed earlier this month that 2007's new van registrations increased by 3.2 per cent to 337,741 units.
