06 February 2008 'Dogs should wear seat belts'

Even pets should be strapped in, says safety group. Wearing a seat belt while travelling is not a safety precaution which should be taken by human beings alone, it has been claimed.

According to Greater Manchester safety group Drivesafe, pets in vehicles should be restrained where possible, reports the Manchester Evening News.

This can prevent them from distracting the drivers as well as keep them safe in the event of an accident.

It may also be that a pet insurance policy is protected if a pet is buckled up before the driver heads off.

The safety body adds that pet carriers, dog crates and harnesses are all viable options for animal owners.

"Drivers need to take responsibility for everyone and everything in their cars, including pets," said a spokeswoman for the group.

This week marks 25 years since wearing a seatbelt behind the wheel became mandatory.

Since then, numerous revisions to the law mean that both passengers and drivers must be strapped in at all times.
