04 February 2008 Think! campaign targets mobile phone users
A new government programme is to target drivers who continue to use their mobile phones while behind the wheel. The campaign from Think! aims to get motorists to switch off when they head out on the road and will be promoted by television and radio advertisement.
It may also be that people find that they save on their car insurance policy once they stop using handheld devices and risking accidents.
Road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick commented on the dangers of not switching off before driving.
He said: "Talking on a mobile phone when driving is distracting and affects your ability to react to dangerous situations, making you four times more likely to have a crash."
This comes close to one year after the Department for Transport increased the punishment which could be picked up by people who use phones behind the wheel.
Since February 27th, motorists can be fined £60 and pick up three points on their licence for breaking the law in such a manner.
