29 January 2008 Young driver statistics outline danger risked
The risks taken by young and inexperienced motorists in the UK have been outlined by new research from a motoring organisation.Road charity group Brake has teamed up with breakdown firm Green Flag in order to carry out the study, in which it found that one in 11 has driven under the influence of drugs.
It added that half of young motorists admitted to using a mobile phone behind the wheel, compared to 35 per cent of older drivers.
This could be a factor in why young people traditionally receive more expensive car insurance cover than those with experience on the road.
Head of campaigns for Brake, Cathy Keeler, commented that action needs to be taken in order to combat the activity.
She said: "The government must take steps to tackle extreme risk-taking and appalling numbers of deaths and injuries involving young drivers."
Department for Transport statistics show that there were 3,150 people killed on roads in the UK over the course of 2006.
