28 January 2008 Car parking fees to rise in Essex town
Car parking charges in an Essex town could increase on April 1st if a council proposal is proved.Plans to levy higher charges in Uttlesford have already been give the green light by the district council's environment committee and a three-week consultation period will begin next month, the Dunmow Broadcast reports.
If the council is successful, it will be the first time in three years that it has raised its car parking fees, thereby adding to the financial burden of motorists who already paying car insurance costs.
Committee chairman Susan Barker said told the publication: "All local authorities review their fees and charges and with limited funding for councils, there is no option but to sometimes raise those charges.
"The raises proposed will still keep the costs comparable with other similar sized towns - and indeed much cheaper than larger towns nearby."
Meanwhile, the Weston & Somerset Mercury reports that a number of councillors in the Somerset town of Axbridge are urging the council not to sell the town's car park in Meadow Street.
