25 January 2008 Car pooling 'could cut emissions, congestion'

Sharing a vehicle could save the planet. Motorists in the UK could emit a smaller amount of carbon and cut congestion if they shared journeys, according to a new report.

The Department for Transport (DfT) paper indicates that over the past month, more than six out of ten drivers have chosen not to travel alone.

If motorists were to continue this trend, they could also cut the risk of compromising their car insurance policies, simply by virtue of using their vehicle less.

DfT minister Rosie Winterton states that more people should look to capitalise on such a scheme, adding that only one per cent of employers actively promote a vehicle pooling system.

She said: "Car sharing helps reduce congestion, tackle pollution and carbon emissions and importantly, cut the costs of travelling [but] it highlights that formal schemes run by employers are still in a small minority."

This comes as Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders chief executive Paul Everitt indicates that carbon emissions from vehicle production in the UK has fallen 41.7 per cent in the last five years, Motor Trader reports.
