25 January 2008 Mobile phone laws 'still being flouted'
Drivers in the UK have not heeded warnings from authorities regarding the use of a mobile phone behind the wheel, according to new research.Confused.com statistics show that 18 per cent more people are caught breaking the law by chatting or texting on the road every month.
This could have an effect on people looking to pick up a cheap car insurance policy, as a conviction could cause cover companies to increase costs if they consider the driver a threat.
"Although many drivers feel that they can safely respond to a text message, while staying in control of their vehicle, it is important to remember that no driver is infallible," commented Debra Williams, managing director of the firm.
Last year, the Department of Transport increased the penalty drivers incur for using a phone behind the wheel to a £60 and three-point licence sanction.
