25 January 2008 Bus lane enforcement may see motorists punished
Drivers in Sheffield are facing punishment if they travel into bus gates in the region, a local news source reports.According to the Star, officials will crack down on those who enter the Bridge Street and Castlegate public transport areas by issuing a warning letter followed by a fixed penalty charge of £60.
Such a motoring conviction may prove to be a problem for those looking to pick up a car insurance policy, as cover providers could choose to increase costs if they feel a motorist is a road risk.
Councillor Bryan Lodge, who also represents Streetscene at Sheffield Council and is a cabinet member for transport, said officials "don't want to fine motorists".
"Using the bus lanes or gates may seem to take time off an individual motorist's journey but this is usually at the expense of others on the road," he remarked.
Earlier this month, council bosses in Sheffield added Molasses to grit used on the road in order to make them safer for motorists.
