24 January 2008 Officer warns motorists of opportunistic thieves
A police official in the north-east has warned motorists of the dangers of opportunistic thieves, it has been reported.Figures from the Sunderland Echo show that there were 1,413 incidents where vehicles were broken into in the city centre from April to December 2007.
Over the time the statistics were recorded, there was a 15 per cent drop in vehicle crime in the region, but this is no reason for motorists to assume they will not be targeted, an official stated.
It may be that a lax attitude to security could compromise a driver's car insurance policy.
"Many of these thefts are the work of opportunist criminals who will break into a vehicle if they can see something worth stealing as they walk past, or try the doors and find a vehicle is insecure," commented chief inspector Aidan Sloan from Sunderland Area Command.
The Home Office reports that there were close to 1.7 million cases of vehicle crime recorded over 2006 to 2007.
