23 January 2008 Valuable reminder for Swindon motorists

Police warn drivers over valuables. Officials in Wiltshire have reminded drivers in the region to make sure that they clear their vehicles of all valuable items when they leave them, it has been reported.

According to the Swindon Advertiser, a spate of thefts has seen motorists in the Wootton Basset and Purton areas lose expensive goods.

One such incident left a lorry in High Street with its window smashed, with criminals looking under seats and in the boot for items, it adds.

Risking crime in this way could have an effect in car insurance policies, as some cover firms could view the motorist to be negligent and increase costs as a result.

"It's not enough to hide away expensive items in your glove compartment - motorists must remove them from the car altogether," said PC Hayley Tarling from Wootton Bassett Police

Last week, a North Tyneside official told News Guardian that "good quality police work" is behind a recent fall in car crime in the region.
