21 January 2008 Fresh warning over mobile phone use
Police in Kent have reminded motorists to make sure they do not use their mobile phones while behind the wheel, it has been reported.According to statistics released by Kent Highway Services and Kent Police, there were some 3,399 instances of fixed penalty notices being handed out between March and December 2007 by officials to those found breaking the law in such a manner.
The penalty for being caught on a handheld device behind the wheel is a £60 fine and a three-point driving licence addition.
It may also be that a conviction seriously compromises their car insurance policy.
Unit Inspector Geoff Wood commented that the county will see an increased amount of patrolling from officials cracking down on the crime.
"The safety of the public using the roads either as other drivers, passengers or pedestrians is far more important than any phone call," he told News Shopper.
The legislation from the Department for Transport was introduced by the body on February 27th 2007.
