17 January 2008 Christmas drink-driving figures down across England and Wales

More drink-driving figures have been released. There was a fall in the number of drink-drivers reported in England and Wales over the Christmas period, it has been reported.

According to figures released by the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo), 7,800 people were found over the limit out of 155,000 breath tests.

This is down from the 9,700 motorists caught out during the festive season in 2006, the figures added.

Motoring convictions can lead to difficulties picking up a car insurance policy, as cover firms often increase costs for those they feel are a risk on the road.

Acpo added that there were fewer drivers found under the influence of drugs during Christmas 2007 compared to 2006, with 153 being caught out compared to 251 one year previous.

In the UK, the law states that drivers must consume less than 0.8mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood before they take to the road.

Once caught over the limit, they could find themselves subject to a fine, a ban from the road or even a prison sentence.
