17 January 2008 Berwick parkers face parking fee increase

Berwick parkers will have to shell out. Motorists in Berwick will have to pay more to receive an annual parking permit from the local council, it has been reported.

According to the Berwick Advertiser, authorities are to increase costs by 26.7 per cent from £75 to £95 this April.

It may be that this extra cost proves to be too much for motorists already paying expensive road tax and car insurance bills.

But transport and environmental regulations manager for the council Gary McBride told the news source that a yearly pass is a better option than daily charges.

He said: "[In 2007-08] parking five days a week for 48 weeks ... [cost] 31.5p per day. The proposed charge for 2008-09 is for a permit to be valued at £95 per vehicle, giving a discount of 88.7 per cent on the basis of previous examples."

The Weston & Somerset Mercury commented that off-street parking fees in Weston are also set to rise for 2008 and 2009.
