16 January 2008 ABD: Dump speed humps
The removal of speed humps from UK roads should be carried out by the government immediately, a drivers' organisation has claimed.According to the Association of British Drivers (ABD), the traffic calming measures are simply "inverted pot holes" and pose problems for motorists.
It may be that they damage vehicles, causing drivers to make a claim on their car insurance policy or pay for damage themselves.
The body cites a Manchester Evening News report in which a police van reportedly flew into a garden in Bolton after hitting a speed bump.
Common misconceptions that the structures are safe need to be readdressed, commented ABD spokesman Nigel Humphries.
"We [need] to get away from the simplistic notion that speed humps make roads safer, they do not, they often make them more dangerous," he said.
Earlier this month, the ABD called on officials to raise funds by selling seized vehicles, rather than simply scrapping them for no profit.
