10 January 2008 Uninsured motorists 'could skip prison for killing'

New sentencing could be lenient on uninsured drivers. Motorists without car insurance may be able to avoid prison if they kill on the road, new guidelines indicate.

According to the Telegraph, proposals from the Sentencing Guidelines Council show that drivers lacking cover could be spared time behind bars if no aggravating factors are found.

It added that in 2006, two million uninsured drivers were behind the deaths of 160 people and 23,000 serious injuries.

An offence exists for motorists without car insurance who kill, but Brake safety group spokesperson Sarah Fatica believes the new rules give the wrong impression.

She said: "These guidelines send out a terrible message to drivers that you can drive badly and cause a death, yet receive only a slap on the wrist."

Department for Transport statistics show that there were some 3,150 people killed on roads in the UK over the course of 2006.
