09 January 2008 Motor insurance agency 'winning war against rogues'
Officials are catching out more people breaking the law by driving without a car insurance policy, it has been reported.According to the Motor Insurance Bureau (MIB), some 150,000 vehicles without cover were taken off the roads last year compared to 78,000 12 months previous, Insurance Daily states.
The body commented that cameras which can read and identify automobiles from their licence plates have helped in the battle against the problem.
Fines subsequently handed out to offenders could go some way towards paying back the £360 million the MIB paid out last year in claims involving uninsured motorists.
"We are really beginning to win the war against uninsured driving," said a spokesperson for the association.
Meanwhile, the Daily Mail has published statistics from DVLA which show that some 9,000 cars per month are being towed away and taken off the road.
It added that it expects the total figures to reach over 100,000 each year.
