07 January 2008 Motorists 'keeping valuables out of sight'

Motorists should make sure they leave nothing on display. Police advice to keep valuable items out of the sight of opportunistic thieves has been heeded by drivers in the south Worcestershire region, it has been reported.

Thefts from unattended vehicles in the area have dropped, with 51 per cent fewer satellite navigation devices stolen and 49 per cent fewer laptop computers being taken over the last six months.

As a result it may be that motorists find that their car insurance policies are cheaper, as cover firms perceive the threat of theft to be smaller.

A force spokesman commented that the body is pleased that motorists are taking the initiative on the matter.

"It is heartening to see that more and more drivers are taking our best advice and not giving opportunist thieves any chance to undertake what can sometimes be less than two minutes activity," said the representative.

Figures from the Home Office show that there has been a 51 per cent fall in vehicle crime since 1997.
