03 January 2008 Cracking windscreens 'potential problem for 300,000 young drivers'
Motorists between the ages of 19 and 21 could find that they are putting their vehicles and personal safety at risk by not preparing themselves for the winter, it has been claimed.According to car care specialists Comma, 30 per cent of drivers in the age group could crack their windscreens by using hot water to de-ice them compared to only nine per cent of 51 to 55-year-olds.
Motorists who de-ice their car in such a fashion may find that they face a lower risk of damage, which could in turn reduce the number of accidents they are involved in.
"In cold weather, everyone needs to take a bit of time to clear the window. A scraper should be an essential item in the car, along with a bit of de-icer for when the ice is really stubborn," said Mike Bewsey, spokesman for the firm.
Meanwhile, Britain is set to experience bitter winds coming eastwards from Siberia over the weekend, resulting in the Highways Agency telling drivers to remain careful while driving.
