03 January 2008 Mobile users 'clog up the road'

More evidence against using a phone behind the wheel. Using a mobile phone while behind the wheel may have an effect on traffic flow as well as road safety, new research has indicated.

According to a study from the University of Utah's Traffic Lab, motorists chatting and texting in their vehicles impede others and extend the time of the commute.

Such action may prove frustrating to drivers and cause them to make rash road decisions which lead to accidents and invalidate their car insurance policies as a result.

Peter Martin, from the university department, described the problem as "a bit like breaking wind in the elevator - everyone suffers".

"When a driver who is not distracted is in a traffic stream and the vehicle in front slows down, the driver will brake in response. When a vehicle speeds up in front, the driver will respond and speed up," he said.

Last year, the Department for Transport increased the punishment for those caught using such devices behind the wheel to a £60 fine and three-point licence penalty.
