02 January 2008 Motorists told to check their tyres

Tyre safety checks are even more important during wet and icy weather Tyre safety is vital to reducing the number of accidents on wet and icy roads, a safety organisation suggests.

A leaflet published by TyreSafe recommends that motorists should consider using cold weather tyres in conditions where temperatures are seven degrees centigrade or below.

With a more flexible natural rubber grip, stopping times are improved and cold weather tyres do not suffer from the wear and tear that summer tyres do in winter.

A spokesperson said: "While the market for this type of tyre in the UK is currently small, cold weather tyres are becoming increasingly popular across the rest of Europe."

On its website the organisation reported that Hertfordshire police had found that defective tyres were responsible for a fifth of deaths and injuries on the county's roads.

Safer tyres could be a boost for motorists who are seeking to avoid not only the accidents themselves but also the damage to their no claims car insurance premium.
