31 December 2007 'No excuse' for avoiding cover
Householders can no longer use the excuse of ignorance for failing to purchase home insurance, an industry expert has said. The suggestion was made by Steve Foulsham of the British Insurance Brokers' Association, who explained that the media coverage of this summer's floods had brought the issue of contents insurance to the fore.
Mr Foulsham said: "There was a lot of exposure to that so I think that anybody now that doesn't realise the availability of household contents insurance is deluding themselves."
Anyone who still opts not to take out cover must be making a conscious decision not to insure their household belongings, he continued.
However, Mr Foulsham added that many people still require advice from their insurer about the level of cover they need to purchase.
The Association of British Insurers estimates that the flooding of June and July led to 120,000 home insurance claims and that insurance companies paid for alternative accommodation for 14,500 families while their homes were uninhabitable because of water damage.
