31 December 2007 Covers can 'prevent mindless damage'

Vandalised car Car covers are an increasingly popular method of protecting vehicles against vandals, a new report has suggested.

Automotive spares supplier Car Parts Direct claims that petty vandalism, such as key scratching and snapping off door mirrors, is a real concern for the country's motorists.

This has prompted many drivers to look for alternative methods to hinder the vandals and reduce the risk of having to claim on their car insurance.

Mark Cornwall of Car Parts Direct said the company had noticed an increase in the use of car covers among people who have to leave their vehicles outdoors for long spells.

"Owners cover their car when parked outside their homes. It helps prevent mindless damage and can avoid their vehicle being stolen," he explained.

The 2006-07 British Crime Survey revealed that 28 per cent of people are concerned that their area has an anti-social behaviour problem that manifests itself in the form of deliberate damage to property such as vandalism or graffiti.
