28 December 2007 Motorists urged not to drink and drive
Drivers have been advised to avoid drinking any alcohol behind getting behind the wheel of a car.Chief Superintendent Tim Love from Strathclyde Police warned that those who took to the roads while intoxicated were gambling with their own safety, as well as endangering other people's lives.
Therefore, he recommended that people leave the car at home if they were planning to consume alcohol on a night out.
He commented: "The only safe option is not to drink when you have your car with you.
"Enjoy your nights out but please leave your car at home."
Chief Superintendent Love added that if drivers were caught breaking the law, they faced consequences such as losing their licence and possibly their livelihood as well.
Furthermore, cover providers may be reluctant to offer cheap car insurance premiums to people with driving convictions.
According to official data, almost one in six fatalities on the roads involve a motorist who is above the legal alcohol limit.
