24 December 2007 Drivers told to take care on icy roads

Motorists who get caught up in icy weather conditions have been urged to take extra care on the roads.

The Highways Agency stated that moving vehicles would take longer to stop if the road surface was slippery.

Therefore, it has urged drivers to take this into account during spells of cold weather and adjust their stopping distance accordingly.

By remaining too close to the car in front, motorists could be making themselves much more vulnerable to a road accident.

This could have a significant impact on their car insurance policy, as their cover provider may be less willing to offer cheap premiums to those with a history of being involved in collisions.

Road users were also advised by the Highways Agency to drive with extra care and attention even if the roads had been treated by salt spreaders.

Meanwhile, drivers in many parts of the country have been dealing with delays brought on by thick fog.
