21 December 2007 Drivers 'still using mobiles behind the wheel'
Motorists have still not got the message over the use of mobile phones while on the road, it has been reported.According to the Peterborough Evening Telegraph, 340 people were caught out on the devices in October and November this year.
This comes despite increased sanctions against the act, brought in last February, which means offending motorists can now receive a £60 fine and three-point licence penalty.
Furthermore, the Crown Prosecution Service yesterday revealed that the crime could also see drivers pick up a two-year jail term.
A car insurance policy can also be compromised if cover firms consider the activity enough of a risk to increase prices.
Cambridgeshire police constable Tony Barrios commented on the threat drivers pose if they use the devices at the wheel.
He said: "Research suggests that reaction times are 30 per cent worse when motorists are using a mobile phone. It can be even more dangerous than drink-driving."
